If we had to describe the eleventh episode of Nigerian Idol Season 9 that took place on Sunday, June 30, in a single word, it would be “incredible.” It was nothing short of spectacular. It had it all, including stunning performances and an unexpected proposal. This episode’s theme was “Doubling Up the Music,” and contestants had to play on stage two songs each.
The live show was hosted by the charismatic IK Osakioduwa. The judges’ table consisted of music industry experts Omawunmi, Ric Hassani, 9ice, and MI Abaga as guest judges.
The night began with the five contestants being called on stage to decide the final four that will be performing from over 40 million votes recorded that week. Maio got evicted. It was a tough one indeed, and it was quite a shock to see him leave, but the polls decide who gets evicted.
The remaining four contestants of the musical reality TV show performed both an unplugged version of a Nigerian hit and an R&B track. Chima opened the night by performing “Essence” by Wizkid and Tems, which was released in 2020 and became the first Nigerian song in history to chart on the Billboard Hot 100. His second song, Chaka Khan’s 1984 hit “Through the Fire,” is a classic that has been covered by many musicians. It was a huge hit that emphasized Chaka Khan’s amazing vocal range and did the same for Chima. Omawumi said he always outperforms himself, and that’s his only rival. Even 9ice was full of admiration for Ric as he continued his friendly “hate,” expressing his frustration at his flawless performance every time.
“Olufunmi” by Style Plus, a 2003 Nigerian R&B classic that immediately won over listeners with its poignant lyrics and silky harmonies, was Lammy’s first song to perform live. Joking around with good cheer, IK asked Lammy how old he was and if he had even been born when the song came out. His second song is a single off of John Legend’s 2013 album “Love in the Future,” “Ordinary People,” which is renowned for its exquisite arrangement and unadulterated emotion. While pointing out a few shortcomings, the judges were moved by his genuine connection to the song. Lammy acknowledged that during his debut performance, he let his emotions get the better of him.
The 2021 hit song “Baby Riddim” by Fave, which highlights the rising star’s distinctive fusion of Afrobeat and R&B, was performed by Mira Clear. Beyoncé’s “Broken-Hearted Girl,” a poignant ballad from the 2008 album “I Am… Sasha Fierce,” which tackles themes of heartbreak and resiliency, was the second song she performed. Omawumi praised her resolve and audacious decision. “Mira Mira on the wall,” as Ric began, was his catchphrase, and he complimented her beautiful appearance and performance. She was also praised by 9ice, who said that her talent was “as clear as a miracle.”
Chioma walked up on stage with all the energy in an outstanding outfit and blew everyone away with her second epic performance of “Man Down” by Rihanna. With a beat influenced by reggae, Rihanna’s “Man Down,” from her 2010 album “Loud,” narrates a dramatic tale of regret and conflict. The performance left the audience in awe and with deep admiration for her talent and spirit. The judges showered Chioma with praise, unanimously agreeing that her performance was the best of the evening.
