The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially kicked off its Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, a major step aimed at encouraging democratic participation and updating the national voter register. This critical exercise began on Wednesday, 18 August 2025, and is scheduled to run until 30 August 2026.
The Continuous Voter Registration is structured in three phases (quarters) and utilizes a dual-track approach, offering both digital convenience and traditional in-person processing. The online pre-registration phase started first on 18 August 2025 and will continue until 10 December 2025. The physical, in-person registration commenced a week later, starting 25 August 2025, and is available from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. daily, Monday to Friday, at all INEC Local Government Area (LGA) offices and State Secretariats across the country.
This registration window is essential for several groups of eligible citizens. Primarily, it targets first-time registrants who are Nigerians aged 18 and above and residents in the country. Beyond new voters, the exercise also caters to existing registered voters who need to replace a lost or damaged Permanent Voter Card (PVC), transfer their voting location within or across states, or update personal details such as their name, address, or marital status.
The introduction of online pre-registration via the dedicated Continuous Voter Registration Portal not only makes the process easier but also significantly reduces the time registrants spend at the physical biometric centers. Citizens are encouraged to utilize this opportunity to ensure their voice counts in future elections.
