Alfa Romeo, the renowned Italian automaker, has officially unveiled the name of its upcoming crossover: the Alfa Romeo Milano. This name not only pays homage to the city of Milan, where the company originated in 1910, but also holds sentimental value for loyal Alfisti. Those who lived in the United States might recall this name being previously used for the 75 model.
While no official images of the Alfa Romeo Milano have surfaced yet, the company has described it as a “sport urban vehicle.” It’s anticipated that the Milano will share its platform with the European version of the Jeep Avenger and may not be available for purchase in the United States. Positioned below Alfa Romeo’s Tonale, which already sits at a compact size suitable for American preferences, the Milano aims to target a similar segment.
Details on the Milano’s powertrain remain limited. Alfa Romeo confirmed the Milano’s availability in a “100% electric version,” suggesting the presence of gasoline or hybrid versions as well. Speculations indicate the possibility of a 1.2-litre turbo three-cylinder engine paired with a hybrid system, producing 155 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque.
The electric variant of the Milano is anticipated to feature a 53 kWh battery powering a single front electric motor generating 154 hp and 192 lb-ft of torque. The Avenger, sharing a platform, boasts a WLTP-rated range of 250 miles (around 223 miles EPA).
However, the inclusion of a hybrid model raises questions about Alfa Romeo’s commitments. Larry Dominique, head of Alfa Romeo in North America, previously stated, “The next vehicle after Tonale is a BEV, and everything after that point is BEVs, starting in 2025.” While technically not untrue, due to Milano’s BEV version, it doesn’t fully align with the brand’s electrification strategy.
Jean-Philippe Imparato, CEO of Alfa Romeo, expressed, “With the arrival of Milano in 2024, Alfa Romeo completes a lineup capable of meeting the desires of all our enthusiasts and much more.” He emphasized Milano’s significance in the brand’s transition to electric and its role in bolstering Alfa Romeo’s global presence, similar to the Tonale.
Alfa Romeo plans to unveil detailed information about the Milano in April 2024.
