The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has launched a digital platform to ensure fast delivery of coronavirus test results in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
Early July, Federal Government of Nigeria unveiled a diagnostics test kit, RNA Swift, for the identification of SARS-CoV-2. It is the causative agent of COVID-19. UK-based Nigerian scientist, Alison Nwokeoji, developed the RNA swift test kit for COVID-19 at the University of Sheffield, U.K.
NCDC, head of department, surveillance and epidemiology, Mrs Elsie Ilori at the presidential task force on Covid-19 announced the roll-out of an automated platform to check COVID-19 negative results, in FCT after successful pilot. She said that the digital platform, called Surveillance Outbreak Response Management Analysis System (SORMAS), would be used to communicate directly to individuals through SMS alert.
According to Mrs Elsie Ilori, individuals would get a code to enable them print their test results if they wished to while the authencity of the Covid-19 test results can be confirmed using a barcode.
The Director stated that only negative Coronavirus test results would be communicated though the digital platform for now while the positive results would be sent through the health professionals.
According to her “Positive cases are communicated by the state to ensure psychosocial counseling is done” The coronavirus test result is valid only for 14 days from the day of sample collection.
Most airlines have made the COVID-19 test result certificates compulsory before boarding. The test results certify’s travellers negative for the virus which is one of the condition before boarding when operations on international flights resume in Nigeria. This digital platform would ensure a fast delivery of authentic test results most especially for travellers.
