The local production of Apple phones in India is saving Apple 22 percent on import duty. Apple is also making plans to slash iPhone 11 prices in India in the future.
Apple started its domestic manufacturing in India back in May 2017 by locally producing the iPhone SE and nine months ago, the Cupertino giant started the assembly line for the iPhone XR in India. Earlier this month, Foxconn, which is a Apple supplier for iPhone and other devices invested $1 billion to expand its India factory where it assembles iPhone models. Sources also disclosed that it a part of a gradual production shift by Apple away from China as it navigates disruptions from a trade war between Beijing and Washington and the coronavirus crisis.
Earlier in May this year, Apple CEO Tim Cook had said that manufacturing in India was one of the company’s top priorities.
“I think India is a very important market in the long-term. It’s a challenging market in the short-term. But we’re learning a lot. We have started manufacturing there which is very important to be able to serve the market in a reasonable way. And we’re growing that capability there,” Cook had said.
In addition to this, Apple is reportedly considering starting the manufacture of iPhone SE at the Wistron plant in Bangalore. It is also reportedly planning to ship iPhone out of India to other countries in order to reduce its dependence on China.
India remains the worlds second largest smartphone market after China. Brands like Xiaomi, Apple, Samsung plan to give Indian consumers’ wants and needs when it comes to its smartphone devices.
